Castello's 1982 pipes were not made in 1982, but the briar was sourced in that year. These pipes are made from the special briar that Castello purchased in 1982 specifically for the Flame series, pipes carved with the likeness of flames rising on the bowl from the heel. Those are very difficult pipes to make and as such are made infrequently, leaving quite a bit of stunning, nearly 40-year-old briar with little to do, except beckon to the pipe makers coyly and tempt them to start working it. Resistance was futile, and the workshop began making its 1982 pipes from this precious briar, such as this Collection Great Line bent Dublin with plateau rim, beautiful flame grain, and gently tapering shank-and-stem combination all working together toward this iconic Castello shape.
