Mixed and flame grain combine on the stummel of this pipe from Poul Winslow, commemorating Poul's 50th year as a pipemaker. He started with Preben Holm and became Preben's head assistant before the shop closed in 1985 and Poul started making his own pipes. All that experience is impressive. I visited Poul in his shop a few years ago, and he made a complete pipe, without staining and sanding, in about two minutes, and it was astonishing to watch. I'm sure he took longer with this Horn, of course, and the care in execution is evident. A milky white acrylic band adjacent to a wide sterling silver fitment decorates the piece at the shank end, while the medium-light contrast stain of the stummel emphasizes the remarkable grain.
