I've never administered a survey before, but if I were to ask the pipe-smoking world which shape was the most classy and elegant, I have a hunch that many would say the Prince. Few designs pull of the shape-chart classic as well as Dunhill's "07," and what better finish to feature it in than this limited-edition Cumberland line? Fashioned in 2020, this exclusive rendition features a stem of lighter-hued, brindled vulcanite compared to Dunhill's standard cumberland from a special stock of vulcanite rods the English marque acquired. Further elevating the composition is a sterling silver accent band that tastefully separates the caramel color of the stem from the stummel's darker, ruddy stain.
When Alfred Dunhill released his patented Shell Briar, he forever changed the pipe-smoking world at large. Dunhill has often been credited with being the first to offer sandblasted pipes (arguably the most popular finish today), and the Cumberland finish further displayed Dunhill's innovative spirit. Well received after its release in 1979, the Cumberland series was named for the English marque's warehouse on Cumberland road, and the line's signature, brindled vulcanite stem became so iconic, the warmly striated material is now referred to simply as "cumberland."
